Is Providence Walkable? A Neighborhood-by-Neighborhood Visitor Guide
Yes, Providence is a very walkable city, particularly if you’re staying downtown or near the city’s central neighborhoods. Providence was voted one of the most walkable cities in the country! We believe PVD is best explored by foot, which is why Providence Tour Company offers a wide range of walkable tours.
Providence’s compact layout makes it possible to explore restaurants, historic streets, museums, shops, and attractions without relying on a car for every stop. But not every neighborhood is equally convenient to reach on foot.
Here’s what visitors should know.
Downtown Providence
Walkability: Excellent
Downtown is a great place to start.
Waterplace Park, the riverfront, Westminster Street, restaurants, hotels, and major attractions are close together.
College Hill
Walkability: Excellent, but hilly
College Hill is highly walkable, but remember the name isn’t just decorative.
There are hills.
Bring comfortable shoes and take your time exploring Benefit Street, Brown University, and the surrounding neighborhood.
Federal Hill
Walkability: Excellent
Federal Hill is easy to explore on foot, particularly around Atwells Avenue.
It’s ideal for visitors who want to combine restaurants, shops, history, and food tours. The best way to discover Federal Hill? Try PVD Tour Co’s Crime & Cuisine Tour.
East Side
Walkability: Good
Neighborhoods such as Fox Point and surrounding College Hill areas are excellent for walking once you arrive, but distances between different parts of the East Side can add up.
Roger Williams Park
Walkability: Good within the park
Roger Williams Park is excellent for walking, but it’s not really a destination you walk to from downtown.
Once you’re there, however, there is plenty to explore.
Do You Need a Car in Providence?
For many visitors staying centrally, not necessarily.
You can walk between many downtown and College Hill attractions, then use a rideshare, taxi, or other transportation when heading farther away.
Another option is to book a tour that handles the transportation for you.
Perspectives on Providence, for example, is a van-based sightseeing experience designed to help visitors see more of the city. See more van tours of providence, RI here: https://www.pvdtourco.com/van-shuttle-tours/
What Should You Wear?
Comfortable shoes. Seriously. Providence is best experienced on foot, and you’ll encounter everything from sidewalks and hills to historic streets and uneven surfaces.
