Life on the Avenue: Immigration, Protest, and Triumph on Federal Hill

The Stories That Shaped Federal Hill

Life on the Avenue: Immigration, Protest, and Triumph on Federal Hill is a powerful, story-driven walking tour that goes beyond the neighborhood’s celebrated food scene to uncover the journey for belonging that shaped it. As you explore one of Providence’s most iconic districts, you’ll trace the journeys of Indigenous communities, Irish and Italian immigrants, and modern newcomers—each group navigating hardship, discrimination, and resilience in their fight to call this place home. Along the way, you’ll stand where protests erupted, revolutions nearly ignited, and everyday people carved out lives against the odds. Blending rich storytelling with local flavor and insider food recommendations, this experience reveals Federal Hill not just as a destination—but as a battleground where identity, power, and community have been contested for generations.
